The fight for fair and accessible housing in Catalonia has taken a major step forward with the launch of the Housing Trade Union Confederation of Catalonia. Approved this past weekend at the II Housing Congress of Catalonia, this new organization brings together neighborhood unions, the Tenants’ Union, various PAHs (Platforms for People Affected by Mortgages), and other housing advocacy groups across the region.
After two and a half years of debate, the Confederation has set its foundations, uniting local struggles into a coordinated territorial strategy to combat housing speculation. The core belief of the Confederation is clear: as long as housing remains a speculative asset, it cannot be guaranteed as a universal right. By strengthening collaboration, the organization aims to respond more effectively to cases involving large property owners and banks that operate across multiple municipalities.
A key milestone of the Congress was the signing of a joint work plan with the Taula Sindicat Laboral, an alliance of labor unions. This partnership recognizes the deep connection between job insecurity and housing insecurity, reinforcing the need for a united front in the fight for fair wages and affordable homes.
With this new structure, the housing movement in Catalonia is entering a new phase—stronger, more organized, and ready to take on the challenges ahead.
