RIPESS Europe is proud to announce the approval of\u00a0a new European project\u00a0that significantly strengthen our work on\u00a0social and solidarity economy (SSE), community-led solutions and systemic transformation:\u00a0CHOICE \u2013 Community-led Housing, supported by the\u00a0CERV programme (Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values).
\nThe project address urgent and structural challenges facing Europe today while placing communities, rights, and democratic governance at the centre of the transition.<\/p>\n

CHOICE \u2013 Strengthening Community-Led Responses to Europe\u2019s Housing Crisis<\/strong>
\nThe\u00a0CHOICE\u00a0project addresses one of Europe\u2019s most pressing social challenges: the\u00a0housing crisis, characterised by soaring prices, limited availability and widespread energy inefficiency, which deepen inequality and social exclusion across the continent.<\/p>\n

Funded under the\u00a0CERV programme, CHOICE responds directly to recent EU-level political developments, including the appointment of the first-ever\u00a0European Commissioner for Housing\u00a0and the establishment of a\u00a0Special Committee on the Housing Crisis\u00a0in the European Parliament, tasked with developing a\u00a0European Affordable Housing Plan by 2026. Access to affordable, decent, sustainable and inclusive housing is increasingly recognised as a\u00a0fundamental social right, as enshrined in the\u00a0European Pillar of Social Rights (Principle 19).<\/p>\n

In this context, CHOICE focuses on\u00a0community-led housing and stewardship models\u00a0as democratic and accountable alternatives to speculative and market-driven approaches. The project builds on evidence such as the 2025 report\u00a0Community-led Place Stewardship\u00a0by the\u00a0European Community Land Trust Network, which highlights the transformative potential of community involvement in the planning, development and long-term governance of housing.<\/p>\n

The consortium partners are\u00a0RIPESS Europe, ECOLISE, ICLEI Europe, ISCTE, GEN Europe, MOBA, the University of Vechta and CSN. The idea is to bring together throught the different activities European networks of civil society organisations, local governments, cultural actors and research institutions deeply rooted in\u00a0community development, participation, SSE and sustainability.<\/p>\n

CHOICE aims to:
\n\u2022 Empower citizens\u00a0to actively contribute to shaping future housing policies through local, national and European debates;
\n\u2022 Promote inclusive participation, particularly of women, youth and migrants, in identifying housing needs and co-designing solutions;
\n\u2022 Facilitate knowledge exchange\u00a0on community-led housing models through regional and pan-European gatherings and a public compendium of best practices;
\n\u2022 Bridge citizen dialogue and policymaking, ensuring that grassroots perspectives inform European housing policies and advocacy efforts;
\n\u2022 Promote gender equality and social inclusion\u00a0across all project activities.<\/p>\n

The approval of\u00a0\u00a0CHOICE\u00a0marks an important step forward in RIPESS Europe\u2019s mission to\u00a0support community-led, rights-based and sustainable alternatives\u00a0across Europe. The project reinforce the role of the social and solidarity economy as a key driver of democratic transformation in housing and beyond.<\/p>\n
